This is the new national museum of history and of decorative arts, where state-of-the-art techniques are used in the display of the collections. These include displays on Irish silver, scientific instruments, and various folklife, weaponry and furniture sections. There's also a Curator's Choice section and a double-height Out of Storage gallery. Don't miss the 2,000-year-old Japanese ceremonial bell.
Facilities: daily guided tours; museum shop, cafe, multi-media, lecture theatre.

Natural History Museum

How to get there: just up the road from the National Gallery of Ireland, or around the block from the National Museum at Kildare Street. Nearest DART station: Pearse Street.

Opened in 1857 with a lecture by Dr David Livingstone, this is a zoological museum, illustrating mainly the wildlife of Ireland, and also including displays of African and Asian wildlife. It's a museum in the old style, and consists of an amazing display of stuffed animals, skeletons, and glass reproductions. You can't miss the gigantic Irish elk extinct for 10,000 years, nor the 65-foot whale suspended from the roof.

How to get there: 5 minutes walk north from O'Connell St., or Bus routes: to Parnell Square : 10, 11, 11A, 11B, 13, 16, 16A, 19, 19A, 22, 22A, 36. Nearest DART station: Connolly.
Featuring the lives and works of Dublin's most famous writers, including Beckett, Shaw, Joyce, Yeats and others, this small museum is definitely worth a visit; and the Hugh Lane Gallery of Modern Art is just next door.
Admission fee, but concessions for children, students, groups. There's also a combined ticket for this Museum and the Shaw Birthplace, or the Museum and the Joyce Museum
Facilities: cafe and a good bookshop; tours available in several languages.

The James Joyce Museum

How to get there: By DART to Sandycove, or by Bus 8 from Burgh Quay.
One of 15 defensive towers built against Napoleonic invasion, this tower at Sandycove in south Co. Dublin dates from 1840; Joyce used it as the setting for the 1st chapter of ‘Ulysses', and it now houses the James Joyce Museum.
Facilities: book shop.
Admission fee, further concessions for groups or families. Combined ticket with Dublin Writers museum and Shaw Birthplace available.
