East Cork
The area of East County Cork, which includes Cork city and the towns of Cobh, Midleton, Shanagarry and Youghal, manages to present the best of its heritage and traditions within a modern context, which makes a visit here very enjoyable. Cobh town was the main port for emigration of millions of Irish people over the last three centuries; now a Heritage Centre here recalls details of these journeys in a series of exhibitions and memorabilia, including from the Titanic whose last port-of-call was here. East Cork is known for its high standard of Irish cooking and hospitality, as exemplified by the Allen family of Shanagarry, where Ballymaloe House, Restaurant and Gardens are run to the highest standards. The Farm Gate, which excels in home cooking and baking, has charming restaurants in Cork city and in Midleton. The Jameson Distillery in Midleton offers an excellent tour through its restored 18th century distillery and warehouses. This area has some of the best pottery and craft studios in the country, including Stephen Pearce hand-made earthenware and glass, Jack O'Patsy pottery and lamps, and the Ballymaloe Craft Shop sells clothes and kitchenware from several sources. East Cork also has a very pleasant landscape, with several sandy beaches (Youghal, Ballycotton, Garryvoe), cliffs at Ballycotton, woods (Killeagh and near Cobh) and gardens (Fota and Balymaloe).
