Kildare

Located south west of Dublin, Kildare is known as The Home of The Horse and has a concentration of equestrian centres, stud farms and race-courses. Just outside Kildare town is the Irish National Stud which is open to visitors and also houses the Museum of the Horse. (Nearby are the renowned Japanese Gardens which were created almost 100 years ago.) Bloodstock sales at Goffs, in Kill (phone +353 45 886600), occur throughout the year, but especially October - December.

There are three racecourses in Kildare, at The Curragh, Naas and Punchestown, which host regular events throughout the year. Kildare's heritage sites concentrate more on the 18th and19th centuries, where the Anglo-Irish influence is seen in the number of Houses and formal Gardens. These include Castletown House in Celbridge, Larchill Gardens in Kilcock, and the Japanese Gardens in Tully.

Kildare also has the Bog of Allen, the largest stretch of bogland in Ireland.
