The West
Counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon lie to the west of the river Shannon. The West of Ireland escaped the Norman Scottish or English influence since it was to the west that many Irish fled during the many invasions of Ireland. Due to this fact, the west is very much the most Irish part of the country with many of the old Irish cultures and traditions still alive here. This area also has the highest concentration of Gaeltacht (Irish speaking areas) with many native Irish speakers (40,000) living here. Principal
