Recently in Madrid I found Restaurante Artemisa - on Calle Tres Cruces off Gran Via. I don't know if it is the same Artemisa featured in your guide, but it did seem to be newly set-up (I speak little Spanish, the proprietor no English). The decor was simple, the atmosphere relaxed. The food offered from a daily menu offering just a few choices. The price was about 8 euro for 3 courses including coffee and wine.

Ratskeller (La Casa de La Cerveza)
Luchana,15.(Metro Bilbao), near the Palafox cinema.
To eat very late. Wednesday nights it's busy, all the beer you can drink for 6 euro. Also tapas.
Be sure to add Casa Paco's to the list. Best steak in the world. Its in the area of the Plaza Mayor (see E-12), past Botin's, down the stairway, to the corner, hang a right. Down a couple of short blocks.

Have you tried Asador Frontón, calle Dr. Cortezo (see G-14 on the maps), in Tirso de Molina? This is a brilliant restaurant. They specialise in two dishes. Carne de Bue (grilled beef fillet) and Merluza. They have many delicious 'starters' but pimientos rellenos con bacalao - Red peppers stuffed with cod - is special.
Another treat is a bowl of consomme from the silver servers in Hardy's just off Plaza del Sol.

La Galette: mediocre food, service very poor, food overpriced, smoking - (see vegetarian restaurants)
