León is a strategic point in north-western Spain thanks to its bordering seven other provinces and four autonomous regions, while it is the natural exit from Asturias and Galicia. The foundation of the city as a camp of the Roman VII Legion dates from the first century AD, when the city was established to oversee the transport of gold from the mines in the northwest of the peninsula.
