Hostales are one of the most economical accommodation in Spain.
These establishments are normally small family-run affairs with few rooms, and as often as not you will deal directly with the owners of the establishments. It is unlikely that the owners will speak more than a little English, if any, and any effort on your part to communicate in Spanish will probably be well received. Staying in these sorts of places often gives you the opportunity to see what is perhaps a more genuine Madrid than that seen from inside a modern luxury hotel.
